I recorded 15 takes
and published nothing.
11:47 PM. Ring light still on. Phone propped against a stack of books. Fifteen clips in my camera roll — each one stiffer than the last. I deleted all of them.
An hour of recording. Zero clips published. Zero people reached. And the worst part? I knew my content was good. The few clients I had always asked: "Why don't more people know about you?"
Because I couldn't get through a 45-second clip without wanting to throw my phone.
What I Tried (That Didn't Work)
- "Just be yourself on camera." — Myself on camera was a hostage video.
- "Write a script and memorize it." — I sounded like a press release being read aloud.
- "Copy your favorite creator's energy." — Their energy was fake. Mine was faker.
- "Just post imperfect content." — I cared. Being told not to care didn't fix it.
I didn't have a confidence problem. I had a thinking problem. My thoughts were unorganized, so my mouth couldn't find the words.
What Actually Fixed It
I stopped trying to write scripts and started organizing my thinking instead. Three thought-beats on a napkin — Crack, Climb, Land. My brain knew where to go. My mouth found the words on its own.
Then I added constraints: a 6-minute warm-up protocol, a 45-second hard cap, and a maximum of 3 takes. The constraints killed the perfectionism spiral.
The Staircase
3 thought-beats. 9 words on a napkin. Your brain knows where to go. Your mouth finds the words.
The Constraints
45 sec max. 3 takes max. Take 4 doesn't exist. Constraints kill the perfectionism spiral.
